I am truly passionate about birth, and all that relates to it.
Birth (including fertility, pregnancy, becoming a mother/parent postpartum, etc.) is an enormous transformation of body and being. I am both trained and deeply drawn to work with women and families as this transition occurs.
As you probably received from my biography if you read it, I trust birth. I trust bodies. I trust you! I believe in you. We haven't even met and I already do. It's true. I believe that our bodies have an inherent connection to nature and are wise beyond our knowing and that it is our task in pregnancy and birth to cultivate the best health, connection, and trust possible in order to bring forth the most ease. I believe in your ability to connect to that inner wisdom and find the best pathway to birth for your unique childbearing journey.
Babies are not delivered, babies are birthed. As a mother, you give birth with your baby's help. It is an active and intuitive process that intimately links your baby and yourself.
Pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, and the postpartum journey are all natural, normal processes that women have been experiencing for many thousands of years. Our species depends on this process to continue to exist. Animals of all kinds birth without assistance quite successfully. I believe that humans are no different, though the presence of a skilled care provider just makes the process that much safer in the event that anything unexpected were to arise. Otherwise, I believe that every woman has a unique and beautiful way of traversing this profound experience of birthing a first, second, third, or fourth (or more!) child.
Birth works. It has always worked. Sometimes there are complications, but in a healthy mother who has received good prenatal care and who has focused especially on optimal nutrition, these are rare.
As a Birth Doula and student midwife, I offer consistent non-medical support for you during your childbearing year. I believe that a doula is a presence that will ideally assist a woman in finding her unique way into and through the birth process in health, connection and trust. Good nutrition, regular exercise, empowering education, informed decision making, exploration of fears or concerns around the birth, and honing a strong connection to intuition are fundamental pieces of a healthy childbearing year. As a doula, I will act as a guide for you to explore optimal choices and actions in your unique journey; you are ultimately the one who takes the actions and makes the decisions. Deep inside, you are the one who knows what is best for you and your baby and family. During the birth, I will endeavor to hold the space as sacred, calm and connected as possible by responding to your unique birthing experience, so that you have the opportunity to connect to your deepest wisdom and find your own way to birth your baby. This can look any number of different ways and we can discuss this in our initial consultation, and in more detail in our prenatal meetings.
As a Birth Doula, I have served women in hospital, independent midwife-run birth centers and home birth settings. I have some experience with women over 40, LGBTQ families, religious families, premature birth, "high risk" mothers, waterbirths, Cesarean births, survivors of sexual/other abuse, families with English as a second language, young mothers/parents, women in their mid/late 20's having a first or second child, women who are creative & passionate, partners who want to have the primary support role, women who know a lot about birth and their bodies, women who know very little about birth and their bodies, etc. I am an inclusive, accepting, heart-centered doula and I would love to work with any woman/family with whom I feel a sense of resonance. The resonance does not have to be in lifetsyle. It is an energy. It is a sense that we both have that we would love to work together. To build trust and connection.
I highly encourage you to contact me as soon as you think you are pregnant so we can begin our sessions together. You are also welcome to contact me pre-conception, as well as at any point in your pregnancy. I prefer to have AT LEAST two prenatal sessions with a woman/family before the birth, but on rare occasions may be open being at a birth spontaneously (as a *doula* which is a NON-MEDICAL provider). I am available as a backup for other doulas in the region.
It is a deep honor to be invited into a woman or family's life as a pregnancy and especially a birth doula. I am incredibly grateful to the families who have invited me into their lives and to their births so far. I am also incredibly grateful to my doula teachers, midwifery teachers and the teachers deep within the women in my life from whom I have learned so much. I look forward to sharing the intimate, tender, always beautiful journey with you, and many more women as I grow deeper in my experience, knowledge and wisdom of being with women.
Postpartum Doula care can look many different ways. Usually, it means I come to your home and do things that are not being done while you get to stay deeply connected to your new little one. I love to support a mama and family in being deeply nourished and getting a chance to rest, especially in the first month or so after the birth. We can talk about details of what I might offer at an initial consultation. I deeply enjoy assisting families as they adjust to a new layer of life together. I have offered postpartum doula care up to 6 months after birth. Postpartum care is sorely lacking in our fast-paced United States culture, and I believe every mother deserves it. If you have the time and ability and feel you could benefit from any extra support postpartum, please give yourself this gift.
